If I went outside right now and my nose started to run, it would freeze and my nose would become an icicle.
4 degrees below zero is a ridiculous temperature.
But NOTHING like International Falls Minnesota. The temperature there on Friday was 46 below. Who knows what the wind chill was. The coldest temperature I have ever experienced was up in Potsdam at a Priest/Laurel conference. We left the cozy cabin that morning to go to breakfast in the hall and it was a glorious morning - sunny, cold, crystal clear blue skies, can you picture it? All of a sudden my nose felt funny. It seemed like my nose hairs were freezing! There was a thermometer nailed to one of the posts so I stopped to check it. When what to my wondering eyes should appear but a reading of minus 18 degrees. Crazy.
My father tells the story of when he was in the Army up at Fort Drum near Watertown. One night dad said it was cold but not terribly cold so he and his buddy went for a walk. A little while later a jeep comes up to them and the driver is yelling, "you **** fools what are you doing out in this weather?"
My father asks, "What weather? We're fine."
Driver says, "Get in the jeep. It's 30 below zero."
Dad said they had no idea it was that cold.
So I guess the moral of this story is - don't join the army. No, no!! Just kidding.
Maybe it's - don't tell your kids dumb things you did. No, no!
Maybe there IS no moral. I don't know.
I think I'm WAY ready for our cruise to The Bahamas!!
